some opinions/tips for improving the game :
1) reduce health or increase damage of weapons
2) when an enemy gets hit, make him stumble or stop for a short period of time
3) add some more sound effects
4) animate the enemies, for example the butcher enemy doesn't even walk when he moves, he just slides around
You think you'e surprised? I was in shock! Frankly, it's a miracle no CrazyMonkeyGames or MorFunZone or Armor Games veterens entered. I bet they would ahve schooled me.
Oh, wait, I suppose at least one CMG veteren did enter. ;)
That said, did you feel that any of the other games submitted were worth more than mine? I think their goal was to offer a purse bigger than any other flash contest around. I guess they hoped people would drop everything and make games for the Wiggi World Contest instead of all those other contests they were already working on.
I'm not sure why it didn't work... maybe because most games are action-oriented. I think a lot of the people who did enter, held back on the action because they were worried any excitement or moving objects in the game would be mistaken for violence. So you've got these action-platform games or maze-running games with no challenges, no bad guys, nothing to do in them except find the exit.
Now, that might seem like a silly reason for developers to be scared off from evene netering this contest, but for a while there, I was afraid my game would be disqualified for exactly that reason. The Wiggi World guys went "we want wholesome games for kids!" but I think a lot of the game developers heard "we want bad games that suck and are boring, because they have no teeth and can't offend anybody," and ran the other way.
I like to think that my game is the sort of rare compromise that successfully marries tried-and-true action-oriented gameplay with a non-violent theme and just a hint of a moral message that even the most paranoid of parents can get behind. At least I did like to think that, until some dingbat wote a review saying my game was too violent.
Oh well, can't please everybody. I am proud of coming as close as I did, though. :)
I love these "total destruction" type games. My only real complaint is you couldn't attack while jumping. And I wasn't sure why the planes were just dropping out of the sky.
Just a few things I think that would help :
1) Increased frame rate, right now the game plays way to slowly
2) A wider range of sound
3) The option to skip the intro
I'm not sure if you have them or not because I didn't play for too long but adding additional weapons / arrow types would be great.
very nice game, my only complaint would be the barrels. Currently they are a HUGE exploit. If your interested in balance you might want to change them so they block both the player and the zombies and so there is a max amount of barrels in play at one time.
